The first logo for ProgClub was an image of a mace, as in a "club". Because every programmer needs a good club! It looked like this:

That was only ever a stand-in logo to fill the space while we came up with our real logo. Initially we were going to contract a graphic artist to come up with a proper image of a "club" for us, but instead the decision was taken to change the logo to the glider, from Conway's Game of Life, as this is the hacker emblem.

The hacker emblem is a sign of solidarity with the following values:

  • Creating software and sharing it with each other
  • Placing a high value on freedom of inquiry; hostility to secrecy
  • Information-sharing as both an ideal and a practical strategy
  • Upholding the right to fork
  • Emphasis on rationality
  • Distaste for authority
  • Playful cleverness, taking the serious humorously and humour seriously
